font-size: 10.0pt;">Asia’s burgeoning meat demand is being balanced against Northand South America’s limited arable land, flattening crop yields and biofuelproduction. The past ten years have seen a coincidence of these factors producethe most volatile, inflationary feed grain markets in living memory.

The first decade of this century saw soybeans kindle foodprice ’agflation’ but the next ten years will see corn become the primarydriver of meat price inflation. In early 2010, major institutions created cornprice forecasts that showed the average price of CBOT corn staying belowUS$5/bushel for the next five years. Corn then jumped over US$5/bushel in lessthan six months. This is because China’s demand for soy is now being joined bygrowing corn imports, both by China itself and increasingly, by Southeast Asia. When coupled with South America’s unstable crop growing weather, this carriesprofound implications for the price of feed and livestock production.

We also disprove the entire ‘climate change’ argument whilemaking an important qualification – South America’s grain growing climate hasalways been unstable. We learn why Latin America’s unstable weather now plays agrowing, but mostly invisible role in the price volatility of feed crops.

Opportunities for global feed safety and sustainability assurance

Johan denHartog, Managing Director, GMP+ International

In this presentation, the market andsocietal trends will be discussed. However they are diverse aluminosilicates witha variety of properties. Many types of clays do not capture mycotoxins; somecan absorb water, others can absorb ammonia, and only certain clays can adsorbmycotoxins. There is no significantcorrelation between any single physical or chemical property and the mycotoxinbinding capacity of clays. Therefore, the effectiveness of a mycotoxinadsorbent has to be evaluated by conducting in vivo test using a scientificexperimental design which measures the beneficial effects of the product onanimal performance and on the target organ(s) affected by the mycotoxin beingstudied. Scientific studies have demonstrated that some aluminosilicates arevery effective in preventing aflatoxicosis at an inclusion rate of 5 or 10kilos/mt of feed; and only few, can do it at 2.5 kg/mt. Very few products areeffective against more than one type of mycotoxin. Recently, special purifiedphylosilicates have been developed, which are capable of binding fusariotoxinssuch as zearalenone, deoxynivalenol, fumonisins, and T-2 toxin at very low inclusion rate (0.5 to2.0 kg/mt).

Combination of Organic Acid to control Salmonella in soybean meal

Juan M. In fact, microbiological quality is increasingly important in order toavoid transmission of potential pathogens through the feeds to the animals. However, the size of the crushing plants (eg. >5000 ton/day) does not makethe control of microbiological contamination an easy thing to do. The use oforganic acids to control Salmonella and other bacterial pathogens is widelyused in complete feeds for swine or poultry, but information regarding its usein this important raw material is very limited. Several trials have been donein order to identify the best combination of acids to control salmonella in SBMin a way that is applicable to large scale production without negative effect forthe workers and the infrastructure.

Effect of heat damage on the digestibility of amino acids in soybean meal

Sheila HeidiM. However, it has been shown thatexcessive heat treatment during these processes decrease the total amino acidcontents as well as the digestibility of those amino acids. Tests, such asKOH-protein solubility, urease, and protein dispersibility, are used toindicate if a SBM sample is under or over processed. Unfortunately these testsare qualitative in nature, so they are limited in providing any indication of whathappens to the digestibility of the amino acids. AMINORED® is a NIRs based toolthat helps qualify and quantify the effect on heat damage in raw materials likeSBM on the availability of amino acids to the animal. Validation trials showthat with AMINORED®, heat damaged SBM can be used without there being anydifference in performance to broilers fed diets with non-heat damaged SBM.Soybean meal samples analyzed in 2011 in Southeast Asia show variations inquality depending on the origin. They are imported mainly from Argentina,Brazil, India and USA. The analyzed crude protein contents of those SBM samplesranged from 47.28 to 48.94%, while lysine contents ranged from 2.88 to 3.02%.In addition to the variation in total amino acid content, some samples werefound to be heat damaged, which impacts the digestibility of the amino acids. If not properly detected and accounted for in feed formulations there is a risk of not meetingthe livestock's nutrient performance thus resulting in serious economic loss.

Improvements in the nutritive value of soybeans and soybean meals by selective breeding

SarahCervantes-Pahm1, Alejandro Buentello2, and JohnSchillinger3

1Director of Feed Marketing – South East Asia,Schillinger Genetics, Inc.

2VP of Research and Aquaculture Business,Schillinger Genetics, Inc.

3President, Schillinger Genetics, Inc., WestDes Moines, IA, USA

Soybeans or soybean meals (SBM), are the major source of proteinin livestock diets. Despite the presence of anti-nutritional factors (i.e.,trypsin inhibitors [TI] and oligosaccharides) that limit their potentialinclusion levels in diets for monogastric animals, soybeans or SBM are one ofthe best plant protein sources for animal feeds. The removal ofanti-nutritional factors in soy products is usually achieved using variousprocessing techniques. However, reducing the concentration of TI andoligosaccharides can also be attained by selective breeding. Recently,Schillinger Genetics has successfully produced novel soybean varieties(Navita™) that contain TI and oligosaccharides at significantly reducedconcentrations as compared to those present in conventional soybeans or SBM.

Low TI SBM. Unique soybean cultivars have been developed that contain 65-90%less TI than conventional soybeans. We hypothesize that heat deactivation maynot be necessary for these particular varieties of soybean. At the Universityof Georgia (unpublished data, Batal, 2011), SBM obtained from low and ultra-lowTI soybean varieties were cold-pressed, and meals were fed to broiler chickens. The concentration of TI in the low-TI (16,000 TIU/g) and the ultra-low TI SBM(5,000 TIU/g) was less than the concentration of TI in cold-pressedconventional soybeans (46,000 TIU), but was greater than inconventionally-treated SBM (de-hulled, solvent extracted, roasted; 3,100 TIU).True metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen (TMEn) in the low andultra-low TI SBM was greater (average 3,749 kcal/kg) than in conventionalsoybean (3,612 kcal/kg) and conventional SBM (3,000 kcal/kg). The greater TMEnof the SBM obtained from low TI and ultra-low TI soybeans was attributed to thegreater concentration of lipids in thesemeals (7.8-14.1%) compared with the 1.9% lipid concentration in conventionalSBM. This indicates that less supplemental oil is needed when cold pressed lowTI or ultra-low TI SBM replaces conventional SBM in diets for broilers.

Similarresults were obtained in a swine experiment conducted at the University ofIllinois, Urbana (unpublished data, Stein et al., 2011). Metabolizable energyof cold pressed low and ultra-low TI soybean (average 4,369 kcal/kg) was alsogreater than in conventional SBM (4,006 kcal/kg). Standardized ileal amino aciddigestibility of Lys, Met, Thr, and Trp in cold pressed low and ultra-low TIsoybeans did not differ from their heat processed counterparts, indicating thatheat processing of low and ultra-low TI soybeans was not necessary for optimalAA digestibility of these novel soybeans.

Low oligosaccharide SBM. Soybeanmeal obtained from low oligosaccharide soybean varieties contained 91% lessoligosaccharides (stachyose and raffinose) than conventional SBM. In a recentexperiment conducted at Auburn University (unpublished data, Dozier et al.,2010), SBM derived from low-oligosaccharide and high crude protein (CP) soybeanvarieties were incorporated in diets and fed to broiler chickens. Apparentmetabolizable energy values corrected for nitrogen (AMEn) were 7% higher forbirds fed low-oligosaccharide-high CP SBM (53% CP and 1.7 % oligosaccharide;AMEn 2,360 kcal/kg) compared with birds fed conventional SBM (46.6% CP and 7.3%oligosaccharide; AMEn 2,190 kcal/kg). Growth studies conducted with these samemeals indicated that 13 day-old chicks fed the low oligosaccharide-high-CP SBMattained an 18 g advantage in body weight compared with birds fed conventionalSBM (381 g versus 363 g). Feed conversion ratio and body weight at 40 days werenot different between birds fed the low-oligosaccharide-high-CP SBM andconventional SBM, but 17% less SBM was required in low-oligosaccharide-high-CPdiets to meet the chicken’s CP and amino acid requirement.

Froma practical perspective, the value added advantage in using these novel soybeanvarieties is highlighted by savings in processing costs (no need forheat-deactivation of protease inhibitors), absence of nutrient deteriorationassociated with heating, and the elimination of detrimental effects of oligosaccharidesin novel soybean varieties developed at Schillinger Genetics.

Algae: a practical alternative for healthy aquatic and animal production

Matthew Caspari, Managing Director, Aurora Algae

It is no secret that algal biomass hasa huge and diverse application potential. For decades, companies andinstitutions have been analyzing the multitude of ways that this fast-growinggreen biomass can impact the world and address its growing problems. Applying algaeas a source of aqua- and land-animal feed is one of the many exciting newopportunities that are coming to market through companies like Aurora Algae. Inorder for a feed product to become a staple in an animal diet on a globalscale, a company will need to produce massive quantities in a sustainablemanner. Aurora grows its proprietary strains of pale-green algae in open pondsusing sunlight, seawater and CO2 from local industrial emitters. There is nofeed vs. fuel argument, as the company’s algae can be grown on anever-increasing scale to simultaneously meet demand from feed, fuel and foodmarkets. A lot of research has been carried out over the last coupleof years to study the nutritional factors that have a positive effect on gutintegrity. An interesting molecule in this respect is butyric acid. Recentresearch in human health has shown interesting properties of butyric acid inthe development and maintenance of optimal gut integrity. Butyric acid, whenpresent in the blood stream, stimulates mRNA that increases cell proliferationfor villi development. Moreover, when butyric acid is present in the lower partof the intestinal tract it can attach to specific G-protein receptor cells. These receptor cells will improve feed utilization via a better feed passagerate as well as regulate and optimize the response to inflammatory stimuli. Inaddition to this, butyric acid can also inhibit the colonization of pathogenicbacteria such as Salmonella. Trialswith broiler chicks clearly show that providing butyric acid in the form of aslow release Na-butyrate improves the development of the intestinal tract whichcan, in part, explain the improvement in performance of the animals.

Strategies for non-linear constraints

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; In this regard it is important to note that sunflower is the best adapted high-protein crop available in some European regions and that is useful to use it in poultry farming as the replacement of other protein sources. Protein and many other nutrients are “imprisoned” to variable degrees, inside sunflower meal fibrous structures, and remain less available for digestion by the poultry’s own proteases and other endogenous enzymes. Added exogenous enzymes (phytase, hemicellulase, cellulase, carbohydrase, protease...) offer a number of creative possibilities for breakdown and “liberation” of these nutrients, their easier digestion and absorption, and thus development of new nutritional standards and new diets formulation. Supplementation of poultry diets containing sunflower meal by different enzymes increasingly contribute to sustainable poultry farming by enhancing production efficiency, increasing the effectiveness of nutrient utilization and upgrading in environmental protection.

Distillers Dried Grains Produced From Corn Ethanol

Kip Karges, Technical Service Director, Poet Nutrition, USA

Dr. Karges’ presentation will cover the growth of the corn ethanol industry up to its current state today as well as what the future may hold. Trace mineral sources bound to organic ligands have a higher availability to the animal resulting in improvements in animal health and performance. New methodologies provide an opportunity to differentiate between sources and obtain a better understanding of the potential for the mineral/ligand complex to increase trace mineral supply. These studies coupled with animal experiments provide a clearer picture of the importance of organic trace minerals in animal production systems. This paper will discuss these aspects of trace mineral supply and the benefits which can be expected from their use.

Nutritional value of wheat DDGS for ruminants and pigs

Johan De Boever, ILVO,Animal Sciences, Belgium

The nutritive value of eight batches of DDGS wheat were evaluated by means of chemical analysis and in-vivo trials. This scheme also combines a practical application of relevant quality management requirements of ISO 9001, HACCP and prerequisite programs for the different types of companies in the feed chain. More than 11,570 companies located in 65 countries worldwide participate in the GMP+ FSA scheme.
GMP+ International offers to GMP+ certified a lot of information collected during many years of experiences, stored in an interactive Feed Safety Database.
The GMP+ International’s organisation will be explained. Their participation in the conference will underpin the high level of information delegates can expect from the meeting.

The European Feed Technology Center, EUFETEC, is a new organization that unites European animal feed manufacturers, academia and researchers in a common vision for the sector. Founding members are: BEMEFA (Belgium); FEFAC (EU); CESFAC (Spain) FRANA (Belgium) / FEFANA (EU); TECALIMAN (France); Wageningen UR Livestock Research (The Netherlands);
Hogeschool Gent / Ghent University / Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research (ILVO) (Belgium);
Institute for Food Technology (FINS) (Serbia); ISAN – University of Piacenza (Italy); University of Nottingham (UK). More organizations will be included as EUFETEC develops its activities.

Gert van Duinkerken of Wageningen University and Research Centre is a core team member of EUFETEC and stated that "EUFETEC has the ambition to initiate and coordinate a European response to major challenges in areas such as sustainable feed and environment, feed and food quality and safety, and production unit management. The FIAAP Conference is an excellent international podium to contribute to these goals by interaction between industries, research institutes and academia."

By identifying common industry challenges and opportunities, research will be coordinated and the results converted into practical guidelines. The European feed sector is increasingly subject to the political, economic and social forces that are shaping food and agriculture, such as raw material availability and price, environmental impact of both manufacturing and livestock production and consumer safety.

Careful ingredient selection and formulation and the skilful application of appropriate feed additives have never been more crucial for meeting the primary objectives of feed production: food and feed safety, nutritional excellence, and of course, profitability. The FIAAP Conference 2011 will provide insight into market direction, innovative solutions for optimizing available raw materials, functional ingredients for animal health, environmental impact and the manipulation of finished animal products, and feed additives for physical quality and food chain safety.

Please note: PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Walk-ins will only be accepted on a space available basis. Not all species are represented in all samples and it is possible to source meals that are uni-species or, more specifically, meals that do not contain material of porcine origin.
Meat and bone meals provide a very digestible source of amino acids, minerals and energy. As a protein source MBM is similar to soybean meal and is relatively high in lysine, arginine, threonine and valine. It is lower in tryptophan, isoleucine and total sulphur amino acids than soybean meal but tends to compliment the latter well in diets for pigs and poultry.
The macro minerals Ca, P, Na and Mg are present at high levels in MBM and this can be of major economic value in monogastric diets although it does limit the inclusion of MBM in aquafeeds. MBM contains no phytate and the digestibility of minerals in all species is high, allowing the removal of all inorganic P sources from the diet, particularly when used in conjunction with phytase enzymes. Of the trace minerals Fe and Zn are present in significant amounts.

Animal proteins have been shown to be significant sources of functional nutrients such as carnitine, creatine and conjugated linoleic acid. Carnitine is important in maintaining fertility and creatine is involved in energy transfer in muscles. Conjugated linoleic acid has a role in phospholipid metabolism in cell membranes and has been shown to be involved in the immune response. Responses to these functional nutrients have been seen in animals fed diets based on grains and vegetable protein meals.
The current high cost of fish meals has made MBM an economic alternative in feeds for many fish and shrimp species. Recent research has indicated that a high percentage of the fish meal content can be substituted with MBM without loss of performance with major savings in diet cost.

Conference fees will rise November 1

Only three days left to enjoy early conference booking rates. There have been continuous efforts in improving the livestock performance through improvements in breeding/genetics, housing, management, health status and nutrition, among others.

Out of these components feed costs often contribute by more than 60% of the total production cost. The task for nutritionists is therefore to come up with good quality feeds at the lowest possible cost. In order to achieve such a very challenging task measures need to be taken in order to get the most out of the raw materials that is being purchased.

This presentation will focus on how a thorough evaluation of the very variable protein sources meat and bone meal, rice bran and DDGS can affect and improve the value of these raw materials. The same grains were fed to swine, broiler chickens and cattle. Through the use of near infra-red (NIR) technology, a number of NIR calibrations have been developed and are now being used in Australia to determine available energy content of grains.

The technology provides a low cost and rapid analysis method, allowing feed manufacturers to fine tune feed formulations. The technology also enables the marketing of feed grains based upon their energy content.

The paper will detail the livestock feeding research that has been completed and the commercial application of the technology for the feed industry. Data will be presented on the variation that naturally occurs in feed grains and how different grains are better suited for each livestock species. For example some lines of wheat are ideally suited for pig and poultry feeding, whilst other wheat lines are better suited for cattle feeding. There are presently no rapid analysis tools available to assess these differences in feed grains.

The link between grain physical and chemical characteristics and its available energy content will be discussed.

The technology has use within the Asia Pacific Region in assessing feed grains utilized in animal feeding applications.

SODIUM BENZOATE – A PROMISING ACIDIFIER IN PIG DIETS

Li Li , Technical Ma –Kemira Asia Pacific, Singapore

Growing concerns about environmental pollution as a result of excessive manure production or ammonia emission from piggeries, and most importantly, ban on using in-feed antibiotics for swine in many countries, forced pig researchers to find reliable and environmentally friendly alternatives.

A few short-straight-chained organic acids , such as formic, acetic, propionic, lactic, butyric and citric acid and their salts, have been widely used in the pig industry due to the following beneficial effects: 1) Reducing diet and gastric pH – reduced survival of pathogens, such as E coli, through the gastrointestinal tract; 2) Direct kill of pathogenic bacteria and 3) serving as bubstrates in the intermediary metabolism (Partanen and Mroz 1999). Of course, there are still many open questions in regard to the mechanisms of action, comparative efficacy of different acids and the role of carriers and coatings.

Nevertheless, inspired by the above outstanding performance of short-straight-chain organic acids in livestock production, animal scientists have been continuously researching the rest of the organic acid family in order to find the next novel generation of animal health and growth promoters. Recently there is a developing interest in sodium benzoate (NaC6H5CO2), the salt form of benzoic acid (C6H5COOH), which is classified as the aromatic carboxylic acid. There have been quite a large number of safety scares in recent years with trace mineral sources. Contamination of trace minerals is a global problem, but the sources of contamination are often common & traced back to Asia – mainly China. Risks factors include Dioxins, PCBs and Heavy Metals. It is a company’s responsibility to ensure that their products are safe for use, and tailoring a quality control program to evaluate such risks goes a long way to address this challenge.

BACTERIAL CONTROL IN FEED PRODUCTION AND PROCESSING – WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS AND BENEFITS?

Dr. Adam Smith, Dep. Such infection is known to have an adverse effect on the performance of the animal and the safety of animal derived food products.

Given its importance as a human pathogen, Salmonella is perceived to be the major hazard for animal feed, however, the presence of other bacteria such as E.coli and Clostridium Spp are also of significant importance.

This paper will look at the level, type and frequency of bacterial contamination in commonly used feed materials.
